The reverse of this popular type illustrates the old adage that dog is man's best friend. While Ulysses was wandering about after the fall of Troy experiencing various adventures due to running afoul of the gods' pleasure, his dog, Argus, protected home and hearth. The scene on this coin shows Ulysses finally arriving home after twenty years, and wearing a disguise as he needed to fight off the suitors for his wife, yet Argus recognizes him and lets out a howling ruckus. Ulysses greets his dog with kindness, after which he heads to the house and Argus, the ever faithful companion, now happy that he has again seen his master, lays down and dies.
